UFC 209: Khabib Nurmagomedov v Tony Ferguson interim title bout cancelled
Downes: I’m a little confused, Ben. It’s an evolve-or-die type of mentality and competitiveness to wake up every day to try to get better.
With this fight now falling apart three separate occasions, UFC president Dana White doesn’t sound too certain about booking Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson for a fourth time. That wasn’t all, though. He lost out on a huge payday in the short-term, but his inability to make the weight for a title fight is a more lasting concern for the overall direction of his career, which has never been at such a crossroads.
Michael Johnson, a lightweight contender who lost to Nurmagomedov last November, said he had tentatively agreed on Friday to replace Nurmagomedov against Ferguson.
“The thing is that he [Ferguson] was devastated”, White said at the post-fight press conference.
Then we have the Alistair Overeem situation. Now, there will be no interim champion as UFC has canceled the fight. We’re not thinking about what’s next at this time. What you have to do is go to the Forbes and see what he’s worth. UFC officials are indicating that “weight management medical issues” led to Khabib’s hospitalization.
What’s the difference between your average doctor and a UFC doctor? “@Ufc Told Me It Wasn’t For The Title And It Was For Less Pay”.
Reports coming out of Russian Federation and quoting the fighter’s father said Nurmagomedov was in hospital and the fight was off.
Ronda Rousey’s future is in doubt following her devastating back-to-back knockout losses, while Jon Jones’ penchant for f***ing up means you can’t really rely on him. I want the money fights.’ What? are you all going to move down and fight Conor?
The Overeem situation seems slightly different, though.
“Everybody listen, I’m getting exhausted of the term ‘money fights, ‘ ok?”
“I thought it was a nightmare, man”, Ferguson said of his reaction to the bout’s cancellation. I don’t now how real or fake it is, but who knows. After the two went to war in what wound up being a majority draw, Woodley and Thompson have chose to go at it again, to see which 170-pounder is the best. “It makes business sense”, said Mayweather to Davies.
Who knows if the UFC’s medical staff could have done something else to save the fight.
