UFC Fight Night 83 results: Donald Cerrone def. Alex Oliveira
After losing to lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos two months ago, Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone is putting all of it behind as he looks for a powerful comeback when he faces Alex “Cowboy” Oliveira in UFC’s Fight Night 83, Sunday at the CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh. Guimaraes will be making his UFC debut in this fight and he does so while on a six fight winning streak.
Cerrone is never one to enjoy long breaks between fights, but Cerrone was particularly eager to get back into the cage after the loss, a break of roughly two months. Oliveira used his three-and-a-half-inch reach advantage well, landing a punch combination that snapped Cerrone’s head back, but when Oliveira loaded up again, Cerrone timed it and scored a double-leg takedown, landing in half guard.
Meanwhile, Alex Oliveira (13-2-1) will be competing for the fourth time as a short notice replacement in five of his UFC appearances. Oliveira drops to 3-2 in the UFC, with both losses coming by submission. “This one was for me”, he said after the fight, before thanking Oliveira for taking the fight on short notice. Oliveira worked with knees to Cerrone’s obliques and abdomen. Cerrone then went for a triangle and was able to force Oliveira to tap out.
