Andy Murray will take on Goffin first up in a clash of the two No.1s with Ruben Bemelmans scheduled to take on Kyle Edmund in the final rubber.
Murray yesterday played alongside his brother Jamie in doubles against Darcis and Goffin.
A stunned Goffin finally got a foothold when he broke the Edmund serve to open a 3-1 lead in the third set and the momentum quickly swung his way.
Belgium easily held serve to move ahead 3-1, but Andy answered emphatically with a hold for love.
Against Ferrer at the O2 Arena in London, Murray was able to win with plenty of help from the Spaniard’s serve. The Argentine duo of Carlos Berlocq and Leonardo Mayer won a five set war against the Belgian duo that ended in a fifth set tie breaker.
Andy found himself facing a break point in the in the ninth game but Darcis missed a return, and it was the Murrays who took the set in the next game.
Jamie Murray, a mixed doubles grand slam champion and finalist in men’s doubles at Wimbledon this year, was always the more vulnerable brother on serve. More so, if Andy achieved the remarkable goal alongside Jamie.
At the end of it all, it was left to Andy Murray to serve for the third set – an accomplishment he duly achieved.
The brothers fought off seven break points in the fourth game of the fourth set to stay one break up and rode that advantage to clinch the match as the Belgians’ spirit collapsed. “We were shouting to each other at times but it’s brilliant”, Jamie said on court as a brass band led a rendition of “We’re gonna win the Cup”. It was a great tactical mix-up.
He said: “I’m feeling really good. But I think it’s important for him to realise the level he can obviously play at, and now keep building on that”. We have two chances to try and win it tomorrow and if you have offered us that at the start we would have taken it.
In the opening couple of sets, you had to wonder whether Goffin had been softened up before this match by his heavy defeat to Murray in the Paris Masters this month, a best-of-three-sets match that the Scot had won inside an hour for the loss of just one game.
Belgium’s No. 1 needed five sets to gets past Edmund on Friday and looked visibly exhausted at times on Saturday, and he’ll need to recover fast to have any chance of upsetting Murray.
