UK minister: Britons may need visas to visit EU after Brexit
“I think the sensible and responsible thing for a Labour government to do is to say: We’re better off in the European Union”, Smith told the “Marr Show”.
May has said she won’t start the two-year process of leaving the European Union before early in 2017 and is seeking the “best possible deal” on trade and services.
The EIB [EIB.UL] is also a central tool for an investment program the European Commission estimated would generate 315 billion euros ($354 billion) of investment in the EU and which is set to be expanded. We want to get the best outcome possible for the United Kingdom but we can’t rule anything out because we don’t know what might happen.
That requires visitors to the United States from countries that do not require full visas to apply online for permission to travel, preferably 72 hours before they leave and pay $14 (£10.50).
Currently, people from a number of non-EU countries do not need a visa to enter the Schengen area.
Ms Rudd said the United Kingdom will be able to control its borders post-Brexit but stressed any measures introduced would have to be “reciprocal”.
“We, of course, need a good Brexit both for Britain and the European Union”, she said. “That’s a given. We have to find a way of doing that”. She said “there wasn’t a sense in the meeting that we are under pressure on this”.
“She said the United Kingdom would take time to prepare for the negotiations, reiterating that Article 50 will not be triggered before the end of the year”, a government spokesperson said.
“It’s going to annoy a lot of people”, he said.
He added many of his peers had responded positively to such an idea, adding that he was surprised at how relaxed preparations for Brexit negotiations in Europe have been so far.
Mrs May has already ruled out the introduction of a points based migration system – one of the key campaign pledges of Vote Leave – and there are fears she will attempt to water down the terms of Britain’s exit from the EU.
“I don’t see any reason to believe he wasn’t just talking about work permits, so not particularly radical”, she said. “I challenge the Home Secretary to rule it out”.
Amid concerns from universities that student arrivals could be reduced, Rudd sought to give some reassurance.
She said a work permit system “certainly has value” and “we are not ruling anything out at the moment”. But students do make an important contribution.
The brighter picture for United Kingdom trade came after total exports jumped by £800 million to £43.8 billion, while total imports eased by £300 million to £48.3 billion. “But we are looking at bringing down the numbers overall”.
Asked about her comment in a TV debate that Mr Johnson was “the life and soul of the party” but “not the man you want driving you home at the end of the evening”, she said: “Boris Is not the the driver, Theresa May is the driver. Theresa May is the driver, and the rest of us are in the auto”. “She’s very clear we’re all focused in the same direction”.
