UK radical preacher Anjem Choudary convicted of IS support
The British press had been prevented from publishing the news details while another trial was taking place, but today a judge lifted the tight reporting restrictions.
Choudary and Rahman will be sentenced on September 6. But for years he was featured in the British tabloids, often described as Britain’s “most hated man”.
Prosecutors accused him and his comrade Mizanur Rahman of pledging themselves to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and telling their followers to do the same.
On August 5, Choudary and Rahman were charged with encouraging support for Daesh, outlawed in Russian Federation and numerous countries, via social networks between June 2014 and March 2015. The men, who denied the charges, are due to be sentenced in September.
“It is true that you have complied with the conditions of your bail”.
Choudary and Rahman are believed to have been recruiters and radicalisers for over 20 years and have been closely associated with another proscribed organisation Al Muhajiroun [ALM].
In March 2013, Choudary, who trained as a solicitor, called for the Muslim faith to “dominate the whole world”.
The trial heard how the men decided in the summer of 2014 that the group known as ISIS [Islamic State in Iraq and al-Sham/the Levant] had formed a “Khilafah”, or Islamic State, that demanded the obedience and support of Muslims. If it was about stoning an adulterer, I would use it to talk about social systems.
It came after Dhar urged Choudary to swear an oath of allegiance to al-Baghdadi, tweeting: “U should tweet.I think a lot of muslims are excited”.
“He’s been given lots of airtime across the media channels for a number of years, nearly two decades”.
He attracted controversy with his views on implementing Sharia law in the United Kingdom – which included turning Buckingham Palace into a mosque – while building up a strong following on social media.
“But there is no one within the counter-terrorism world that has any doubts of the influence that they have had, the hate they have spread and the people that they have encouraged to join terrorist organizations”.
He deserves to go down for a very long time when he is made to pay for his crimes.
The extreme cleric has been convicted of inviting support for terror group Islamic State in a series of lectures released on YouTube. “Finally Choudary can now pay for his actions”.
