UKTF to Begin Postseason at SEC Indoor Championships
This meet is the last qualifier before the NCAA Indoor Championships held March 11-12 in Birmingham, Alabama. ISU is hosting the event for the fourth consecutive year at Lied Athletic Recreation Center, beginning Friday February 26 and concluding Saturday, February 27.
Moving on from the Liberty League Championship, both the men’s and women’s teams look forward to competing in the New York State Championship at Ithaca College this weekend.
All six nationally-ranked men’s teams competing in the meet are ranked among the Top 10 nationally this week as the third-ranked Tigers join the likes of No. 1-ranked Arkansas, No. 4-ranked Tennessee, No. 5-ranked Texas A&M, No. 8-ranked Georgia and No. 10-ranked Florida.
“I really think that losing the Big 12 last year is really driving the team this year to come together and train harder”, senior Akela Jones said. Also, then-freshman Kiare Tanner placed third in the women’s triple jump event with a height of 12.34 meters.
LSU Track & Field is among the most successful programs in the history of the SEC Indoor Championships as the Tigers and Lady Tigers have combined to take home 16 team wins all-time from the meet. Four men’s and three women’s events will feature a No. 1 ranked competitor or relay team.
The Longhorns were thrust into good position following their success in the weight throw and pole vault events.
Garcia added to her already-impressive day with a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.35 seconds. Preliminaries will include sprinting and middle-distance events. Saturday’s events will be begin at 11 a.m. with multi events and field events, while events on the track begin at noon.
K-State was last in action at the Steve Miller Open in Ahearn Field House last weekend.
The team of sophomore Madeline Armstrong, freshman Makaylah Downour, sophomore Barkley Castro and junior Andrea Porter earned 10th place in the distance medley relay, running a time of 12:17.55.
The 2016 SEC Indoor Track & Field Championships will run through the men’s and women’s 4×400-meter relays with this year’s team champions being crowned on Saturday afternoon at approximately 7:30 p.m. CT.
