UM about to go quiet
University of Michigan head football coach Jim Harbaugh is known for his unorthodox recruiting methods. Harbaugh says he tried to sell Thomas, a noted Nebraska football fan who drives his RV to Huskers games, on adopting Michigan as his second-favorite team.
“It’s hard for me to not look at September 3”, he said, mentally circling Michigan’s season opener at Utah.
With all due respect to the reporters in attendance, the highlight of Michigan’s media day didn’t stem from inquiries into the Wolverines quarterback controversy, questions about their practice schedule for the remainder of the month or even Jim Harbaugh’s own unique spin on the start of fall camp.
“We’ll roll the balls out there and let the quarterbacks have at it”, he said. “I love that you’re thinking about that”, Harbaugh said.
MS: On defense, linebacker Joe Bolden is the known figure, having produced all season last year, making a major leap in his game.
DN: What are the expectations for the Wolverines in 2015, and how much of those expectations hinge on the offense showing improvement after a tough 2014 season?
While extolling the virtues of chocolate, two percent and whole milk, Harbaugh advised Carpenter to “drink as much milk as your little belly can hold”.
“All of our quarterbacks, except for [Houston transfer] John O’Korn, they’ve got the license and the ability to compete and earn their position, whether it’s starter, backup, contributor, scout team, etc.”, Harbaugh said. “It makes me really proud to see him here, with his grandfather”. Former UM equipment manager Jon Falk gave Harbaugh No. 4 and didn’t allow Harbaugh to negotiate.
“I drank a lot of milk”, he said, “a lot of milk”.
Harbaugh recalled a conversation with Jon Falk, whom Bo Schembechler hired to be his equipment manager in 1974 and who remained with the program for four decades.
“Nobody’s asked me that question in a long time”, Harbaugh said. He’s more than just an X’s and O’s type of coach, he really wants you to feel and smell the football season when it comes around. “Suffice it to say, that was the last time I thought about being No. 10”.
NOTES: Thursday was youth day at Michigan Stadium, with an autograph session and other activities for kids.
In the same press conference that Harbaugh informed the media he didn’t plan to talk to them much during fall camp, he answered randomly spaced questions from young children.
