UN Calls on States to Combat Militants in Syria And Iraq
“It provides a guarantee that there will be an effective fight against global terrorism”.
Prime Minister David Cameron has insisted the legal case for military intervention against the jihadi group in Syria exists regardless of UN Security Council backing. So much for all those Muslims who condemned the attack and whom we want to keep on our side. “They are terrorists and should be confronted as such with the full force of the law”, Najib said. Russian Federation is trying to pass a similar resolution in the Security Council but is encountering opposition.
The vote on Friday represents a rare moment of worldwide unity over Syria at the United Nations following several years of divisions that have often pitted western countries against Russian Federation.
“The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant constitutes a global and unprecedented threat to worldwide peace and security, ” said the resolution.
Russian Federation presented its proposal on Wednesday and France circulated its proposed resolution on Thursday.
Rycroft said such language “seems to legitimize the authority of Assad”.
The British envoy described it as a “call to action” to member-states to join in worldwide efforts to defeat IS.
The resolution also urges member states to target organizations linked to al-Qaida, such as al-Nusrah Front, an offshoot that is operating alongside ISIS in a quest to overthrow Syrian President Bashar Assad. Mr. Churkin said blocking Russia’s resolution was “politically shortsighted” as it shared numerous same points as the one adopted on Friday. “We intend to continue the active work on the harmonization of our project, with a view to its early adoption”, TASS quotes the diplomat as saying.
United Nations Security Council Resolution 2249, drafted by France, was adopted by the 15-member council via a unanimous decision, according to the Guardian.
The 15-to-0 vote came a week after the terrorist attacks in Paris, for which the Islamic State claimed responsibility, and just hours after the deadly siege of a hotel in Bamako, the capital of Mali, by Islamic militants.
It comes on a day that a Radisson hotel in Bamako, Mali, was attacked by terrorists who took hostages, killing at least 20 people.
The resolution also expressed deepest condolences to the victims of the terrorist attacks and their families and to the people and governments of Tunisia, Turkey, Russia, Lebanon and France, and to all governments whose citizens were targeted in these attacks and all other victims of terrorism.
The council resolution also urges states “to intensify efforts to stem the flow of foreigners looking to fight with ISIS and Syria and to prevent and suppress financing of terrorism”.
Since the terrorism authorization is open-ended, President Obama argued that he didn’t need to obtain a new one when he took action in 2014 against the Islamic State, which began as al-Qaida in Iraq.
