UN Chief Welcomes Climate Change Plan Unveiled By President Obama
The new plan aims to cut carbon emissions from the power sector by 32% by 2030.
“We are the first generation to feel the impact of climate change and one of the last generations who can do something about it”, Obama said in his speech.
At a ceremony at the White House I was proud to attend, yesterday the president finalized the Clean Power Plan, the first-ever federal limits on global warming pollution from power plants. “The President’s Climate Action Plan, including today’s final Clean Power Plan, is already working to comprehensively drive down US emissions, and lead the way for our worldwide partners”, Kerry said. The plan focuses on reducing carbon emissions in each state by clamping down on power plant pollution. “The valuable feedback we received means the final Clean Power Plan is more ambitious yet more achievable, so states can customize plans to achieve their goals in ways that make sense for their communities, businesses and utilities”.
The plan provides incentives to states that meet standards on low-income energy efficiency and renewable energy.
“We’ve been selected to exhibit our technology”, said Rita Hansen, CEO of OnBoard Dynamics. If a state fails to submit its plans by September of 2016, the EPA will impose its own plan upon it unless the state applies for an extension period to finish its plan. Climate change puts those Americans at greater risk of landing in the hospital.
He says bioenergy has the potential to add revenue of $6 billion per year to the country’s economy and there are many economically viable niche bioenergy opportunities.
President François Hollande has saluted the courage of Barack Obama for taking on the fight against climate change.
“I don’t want to fool you, this is going to be hard”, Obama said.
The Los Angeles Times editorial board thinks Obama’s plan “doesn’t go far enough”. Under that plan, Montana is expected to cut its emissions by 47-percent, a figure more than double the previous goal of a 21-percent reduction.
“It encourages the adoption of wind and solar but allows states to rely too much on natural gas, another fossil fuel, to meet their targets”, they said.
In a meeting in the Oval Office, Ban said the rule shows the United States can change the world by being a leader to other countries on climate change.
