UNC Defensive Backs Suspended
Head football coach Larry Fedora said the school has been working closely with university and Chapel Hill Police to gather information.
The alleged assaults took place at approximately 3 a.m. on Oct. 4, hours after UNC’s football team would have returned home from a 38-31 victory on Oct. 3 at Georgia Tech. The two were charged with assault Thursday evening.
North Carolina cornerbacks M.J. Stewart and Mike Hughes face misdemeanor assault charges tied to an altercation earlier this month. One of the alleged victims Patrick Snow, 20, declined to answer questions about the incident when reached on Friday.
According to the Raleigh News & Observer, they turned themselves in to the Chapel Hill Police Department Thursday after arrest warrants were issued for both players. He has since been released on $2,000 bond, and is expected to be back in court on October 22. There’s no word as to whether the altercation was between Stewart and Hughes or if it involved a third party. He played in 12 games last season as a true freshman for Carolina and recorded 26 tackles, four pass breakups and two interceptions. Neither Hughes or M.J. Stewart, the other player suspended, will play in this Saturday’s game with Wake Forest.
