Undermanned Warriors hold off Nuggets, stay unbeaten at home
Golden State (31-2) beat Denver for the fourth straight time overall and at Oracle Arena.
Denver (12-21) came into Oakland with just a dozen wins amid uncertainty regarding the future of head coach Mike Malone and the roster.
But the Warriors, despite a shorthanded roster, were unwilling to take any chances.
The Golden State Warriors and Stephen Curry have suffered another jolt.
It’s no coincidence that Green stepped in to fill the void.
Thompson scored 26 points on 11-for-27 shooting. Unless you let J.J. Barea torch your team for 23 points. But the Nuggets (12-22), who brought a four-game losing streak to town, outscored the Warriors in each of the next three quarters, finally drawing even at 102-all on a layup by Barton with nine-tenths of a second remaining in regulation. The teams traded baskets the rest of way until Thompson hit the deciding basket.
Considering the context, this may have been Golden State’s most impressive week of the 2015-16 campaign.
The Warriors had just seven players available for overtime.
“It was ugly”, assured Thompson, who had missed three straight shots, including two in overtime, before his game victor. Stephen Curry is a huge piece of the Golden State Warriors, but Green is the glue that holds the team together.
Curry, who has a left shin contusion after getting kicked in the same area that caused him to miss two games this week, is listed as questionable.
By January 1, 2016, the Warriors became the face of the National Basketball Association and the greatest show in professional sports. Forwards Brandon Rush and James Michael McAdoo both sat out, Rush with a tight hamstring and McAdoo with a sprained toe.
Looney’s absence this season was expected.
The 26-year-old has had a stellar season for the rebuilding Nuggets. If Curry is healthy, they can play him against the Hornets and rest him on the second day. There is still no timetable for Warriors coach Steve Kerr’s return.
“It’s frustrating because it’s out of his control”. “…When we start to get our defense going again, then we’ll win again, but you can’t give up 109 a night and play well consistently”.
“I know he wants to, and it’s frustrating because it’s out of his control”, Walton said.
Nearing the midway point in the season, Golden State has only two losses.
Green now has his sixth triple double of the season. He added that they were also able to make a number of offensive plays to win in overtime.
