Unexpected historic Game 7 awaits Cavaliers, Warriors
Cleveland took Game 6 at home, 115-101, on the strength of James’ 41 and Kyrie Irving’s 23. This time, after he spurned his home state in a disastrous television special that skewed his public image for years, he was more careful with his words, scratching out an essay that may go down as one of the more consequential writings of contemporary American literature. When the Warriors needed a three late, Stephen Curry could not shake free of Kevin Love for a good look, and at the other end LeBron ended the game with a free throw following a painful fall after Draymond Green foul on a dunk attempt.
But it will be no joking matter if the Warriors become the first team to lose the NBA Finals after taking a 3-1 series lead, which is one historical mark these players are looking to avoid in a season full of records led by the 73 wins after a record 24-0 start. He also had three blocked shots and two steals, overcoming five turnovers.
After blowing two earlier chances to clinch the title, the Warriors were in position for the win in the closing minutes of a tense Game 7 that had the boisterous crowd at Oracle Arena alternating between delirious cheers and nervous energy. Cleveland’s 120-90 win was the first time a team in the Finals had won a game by 30-plus after losing the previous outing by 30 or more.
“Everybody counted us out – and that’s when we strive the most”, Cleveland coach Tyronn Lue said.
“I understand what everyone in northeastern OH have been through the last 50-plus years and I am happy to be a part of history”, said James, who was in tears as he wrapped his arms around the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy.
The Warriors’ Curry scored 38 points and hit seven 3-pointers in Game 4, helping his team win 108-97.
“It hurts, man”, Curry said. “It’s been an incredible two-year run. This is what it’s all about”. He stopped by the winning locker room, too, and Warriors general manager Bob Myers delivered the winning nets freshly cut down.
It would be much more enjoyable for all concerned, of course, if the Cavs ended the game on top.
In every way imaginable-revenue, attention and drama-Game 7 had the makings of the NBA’s richest game.
LeBron James, 31, wants the Cleveland Cavaliers logo added to his championship ring.
