United aim to prove they can score in Wolfsburg
Wolfsburg: Manchester United’s Louis van Gaal says the Red Devils must prove they are good enough to reach the Champions League’s knock-out stages by breaking their goal-drought against Wolfsburg on Tuesday.
United were booed off following their sixth goalless draw of the season on Saturday, but Van Gaal hopes he will not have to rely on CSKA pulling off a shock win over PSV to qualify.
United go into the match as the 47/20 underdogs, having scored just seven times in their last 10 matches, but manager Louis van Gaal is convinced they can discover their killer instinct in front of goal again.
Van Gaal doesn’t quite understand what goes on inside the heads of United fans and why they are not happy with the performances.
“That’s why we have that belief”.
“In every game we create chances but haven’t scored”.
“I have the experience as a manager that the goals shall come”.
“When I have to consider our season then I can only say that the match against Arsenal and against [Crystal] Palace we were not the better team”. “When you speak about United, you speak about a big club and you know they have great players”.
Monchengladbach’s weekend victory over Bayern Munich showed their class and I think there’s every reason to expect a tight contest at City after it took a late, late Sergio Aguero penalty to separate the sides in Germany.
After their game against Wolfsburg, United travel to Dean Court to play Bournemouth in their next Premier League fixture.
Schmeichel was speaking at an event to mark the second anniversary of United’s partnership with Eurobank Serbia ahead of United’s crunch Champions League game against German side VfL Wolfsburg on Tuesday.
Rooney has been far from his best this season, but United fans would surely prefer to be with the England captain than without him for a game the team probably has to score in – and win.
Lousi Van Gaal added that even if Bastian Schweinsteiger is not at his best, he can still lead the team on the pitch. These clubs may have gotten a lot of difficult media attention as they are clubs with not as much history as others, but nowadays these clubs are focused on winning the league, with the exception of Chelsea this year as they are going through a hard journey to retaining the premier league title.
United’s 19-man squad for the Wolfsburg trip includes Paddy McNair (a big doubt with an ankle injury), Nick Powell (just one appearance for the Red Devils in three years) as well as youngsters Guillermo Varela, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Sean Goss and Andreas Pereira.
