United Kingdom man arrested in connection to Wilfrid Laurier University threat
The Metropolitan Police Service in London, England have arrested a 22-year-old man in England in connection with online threat made against Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo that resulted a lockdown on Friday.
The man was arrested in Tottenham Hale, northern London on suspicion of malicious communication and he now remains in custody. It stood out because it used language similar to that found in a message posted before a mass shooting at a college campus in Oregon on October. 1, according to police in Waterloo. The lockdown was lifted at 11:30 a.m., though the university said faculty and staff were not required to come back to work that day.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Waterloo Regional Police Service at 519-653-7700 extension 6399.
Several media outlets reported someone posted a threat against the university in the online community 4Chan.
Police also said Friday that the threat appears to have emanated from outside the country.
Administrators say they were tipped off to the threat by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigations, which is working with local police and the RCMP in the investigation.
