United Kingdom to check VW emissions after scandal
Volkswagen chief executive Martin Winterkorn resigned last night after it emerged on Friday that the German vehicle manufacturer had installed “defeat devices” in its diesel models, to mislead officials over the levels of nitrous oxides emitted. The company’s lack of cooperation could figure into punitive action by the government.
In light of recent revelations, however, it looks like Volkswagen made the wrong bet. There’s no European agency with anything like the regulatory and enforcement might of the United States EPA.
Volkswagen, which had no obligation at the time it initiated the recall to disclose the discussions that had led to it, declined to comment on the letter. The thick, syrupy substance isn’t much different from the oil pulled directly from deep underground. “Everything was fine”. The letter detailed some of the timetable of the EPA’s actions.
The effect of Volkswagen’s emissions-rigging scandal on Denver metro dealers is murky – but local consumers who bought into the German automaker’s clean-diesel marketing clearly feel hoodwinked.
Nitrogen oxides are considered to contribute substantially to smog in cities and respiratory illnesses. The fuel is more expensive than gasoline, because it’s more heavily taxed (by six cents a gallon at the federal level). “But they said that they did not know about that yet”. Apparently, all Volkswagen vehicles sold worldwide with Type EA 189 engines are affected by this. VW lied to me and tens of thousands of others.
The report concluded ‘regulatory action is urgently required in Europe, ‘ The Times today reported. A European Commission study concluded in 2013 that European auto makers were exploiting test loopholes.
One of the biggest reasons clean diesel was so appealing was fuel efficiency.
“It’s what makes your eyes water, it makes your throat hurt, it exacerbates asthma and there are all sorts of cardiovascular problems you can get from it”, Herner said. Of the more than 250 million vehicles in the bloc, the average age is almost 10 years, the carmakers’ association says, and 41 percent of them are running on diesel. By contrast, NOx emissions of petrol vehicles stayed within the limits.
Over the next 12 months, the West Virginia University researchers analyzed the data.
The Volkswagen Group includes 12 brands, and the company has yet to detail fully what cars where were involved.
“This could be an unprecedented loss for Volkswagen”, he said. “They wanted to deploy diesel in America as a way of differentiating themselves from Toyota”. Seeing as Volkswagen have just admitted to manipulating emissions tests in Europe, you can see where this is going can’t you? Vehicles will be recalled and have a technical update applied that ensures the software in question gives correct readings. Can the engines easily be fixed?
“We’re looking at the damage to the environment and that can be measured”, he said.
Diesel cars were promoted in Europe for its fuel economy without regard to its pollution effects.
On July 8, CARB shared its results with VW, but there was no change in Volkswagen’s position.
“Using a defeat device in cars to evade clean air standards is illegal and a threat to public health”, said Cynthia Giles, Assistant Administrator for the Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance. Though this engine is at the center of the fiasco, the EPA is now expanding its scope to other VW diesel engines and nearly every other diesel engine currently being sold in the U.S. Schmidt declined to speak to Reuters. “I’m not mad at anyone except the people higher up who made these decisions”, Murphy said. “Why someone would think they could cheat in this way and get away with it is beyond me”.
