United lose Rooney, Martial, Carrick and Fellaini
Manchester United will be without skipper Wayne Rooney, Marouane Fellaini, Michael Carrick and Anthony Martial for their visit to Watford on Saturday when the Premier League resumes after the global break.
Rooney was brought on as a second half substitute in England’s loss to Spain and played on the wing in the win over France.
Martial, who also played in Tuesday’s worldwide at Wembley, left the stadium on crutches after taking a heavy blow to the top of his foot.
Wayne Rooney may have found the net at Wembley on Tuesday night, but his Man United strike partner Anthony Martial did not have quite such an enjoyable evening as France lost 2-0 to England. Early on in the term Rooney really struggled for form, lacking the composure that has defined him as a United player.
Man of the match Dele Alli was joined by several fresh faces on worldwide duty including Eric Dier, John Stones, Ross Barkley, Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy.
“I am very pleased but it is very fast, although it is the circumstances also”, Van Gaal said.
“I know the World Cup was not great, but before the World Cup you could see the players who were coming through and training with us and I think we have come together since that World Cup and shown good signs”.
Those encouraging displays by emerging England players have led Roy Hodgson to warn his injured stars that they will have to battle their way back into his plans for Euro 2016.
“I would never be able to pick a team on loyalty alone”.
“Wilson can play but he cannot play a whole match because he doesn’t have the rhythm of the game”, he said.
“I guess with any luck we will get that afternoon but it will have to be discussed with the clubs to make sure they think it is an afternoon that is right for them because I and (assistant) Ray Lewington are full timers and can go any time it suits them”.
