United Nations denounces Israel’s grab of West Bank land
Dozens of Israeli settlers with crowbars descend on two homes in the old city of Hebron.
According to Israel Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld, the troops removed 80 people who had moved into the buildings and closed access to the sites. Israeli settlement expansions and territory seizures like this are illegal under global law, though the Israeli government insists they have a religious obligation to seize the territory, and usual react with fury when criticized for such moves. “This should be a reason for a real and effective intervention by the worldwide community to end such a flagrant and grave aggression which kills all chances of peace”.
“As Israel’s devoted friend and its most stalwart partner, we believe that Israel must develop stronger and more credible responses to questions about the rule of law in the West Bank”. Some 146 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire during that time, and more than 100 have been identified by Israel as attackers.
They are accused of stoning a vehicle driven by 64-year-old Alexander Levlovich on September 13, causing it to veer off the road and into a tree, leading to his death.
“Based on the findings of this report, it is Human Rights Watch’s view that any adequate due diligence would show that business activities taking place in or in contract with Israeli settlements or settlement businesses contribute to rights abuses, and that businesses can not mitigate or avoid contributing to these abuses so long as they engage in such activities”, the report says.
In a development likely to further upset Europe, Israeli forces demolished six structures in the West Bank funded by the EU’s humanitarian arm. The structures were intended for Bedouins living in an area between Jerusalem and the Dead Sea, locally known as E1.
Ambassador Daniel Shapiro’s unusually critical comments drew harsh criticism from ministers in Israel’s rightwing government – including from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Israel captured the West Bank from Jordan in the 1967 war. Local resident Shada Haddad, 25, said that clashes broke out between Palestinian youth and Israeli troops when the home owners were blocked by the settlers from entering their buildings.
