United Nations Envoy in Syria for Talks
World powers agreed last week to a cessation of hostilities, set to begin Friday, in order to let badly needed humanitarian aid be delivered. Five medical units and two schools were hit in Monday’s strikes which the United Nations says claimed around 50 civilian lives and injured dozens of people, including children.
Peskov cited Syrian Ambassador to Russia Riyad Haddad as blaming the attacks on the United States, the report said.
“Until now, we hear about them requesting a ceasefire within a week”. Who is capable of gathering all the conditions and requirements in a week?
Regarding talks about a possible Saudi and Turkey military intervention in Syria, Assad said that some countries could “commit follies”, noting that Saudi Arabia and Turkey are not the decision makers, but the Western powers.
“Who will talk to the terrorists? Moving weapons, equipment, terrorists or strengthening positions must all be forbidden”, he added.
“Tomorrow we test this”, de Mistura said.
Since UN-backed talks aimed at bolstering a political solution to the conflict broke down early February, Syrian government forces have gained ground with the help of Russian airstrikes.
Mistura told journalists following his meeting with the Foreign Minister that they had discussed humanitarian access to all besieged Syrian areas, not only those besieged by the government, but also those under the siege of the opposition and the Islamic State (IS) group as well.
