World powers agreed last week to a cessation of hostilities, set to begin Friday, in order to let badly needed humanitarian aid be delivered. Since UN-backed talks aimed at bolstering a political solution to the conflict broke down early February, Syrian government forces have gained ground with the help of Russian airstrikes.

Mistura told journalists following his meeting with the Foreign Minister that they had discussed humanitarian access to all besieged Syrian areas, not only those besieged by the government, but also those under the siege of the opposition and the Islamic State (IS) group as well.
