United Nations health agency: Ebola virus transmission has been stopped in Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone has been officially declared Ebola free by the World Health Organization (WHO), leading to celebrations by citizens and mining companies alike. 42 days, the two Ebola virus incubation cycles, have now passed since the last person confirmed to have Ebola virus disease had a second negative blood test.
Now, Sierra Leone will begin a 90-day “enhanced surveillance” period to make sure there are no new cases. This monitoring phase will be crucial to ensuring the early detection of Ebola cases.
President Koroma said Sierra Leone had no knowledge of this disease and at the beginning there were lots of mistakes made, but now the president says people of Sierra Leone, the health workers all know about the disease and if there is any relapse they will be able to end it quickly. Sierra Leone’s death toll was 3,955 people.
In addition, the use of rapid response teams and strong community involvement became the cornerstone of the national response strategy, continued WHO. She appealed to authorities not to forget survivors, many of whom have faced social stigma and persistent health problems.
WHO will maintain an enhanced staff presence in Sierra Leone during this transition from outbreak control, to enhanced vigilance, to the recovery of essential health services.

BBC reported that tourists have started heading back to Sierra Leone, with the first bas of tourists visiting the country’s beach side on Sunday.
According to Nordstrom’s organization, Sierra Leone had about half of the 28,000 documented Ebola cases tied to the recent outbreak.
