United Nations set to vote on ‘all necessary measures’ to fight IS
FRANCE, hit by the horrendous Paris attacks, is to push for what is in effect a declaration of war against the Islamic State at the UN Security Council.
The measure is the 14th terrorism-related resolution adopted by the UN’s most powerful body since 1999.
Despite differences, after the vote Churkin said, “We condemn unequivocally all terrorist attacks; we stand ready for broad cooperation to these ends”.
The attacks in Paris were launched by three suicide bombers outside the Stade de France where France were playing Germany in an worldwide football match.
French President Francois Hollande welcomed the adoption, saying the resolution would “help mobilise nations to eliminate Daesh” (IS), which has claimed responsibility for the Paris attacks.
It calls on member states to take all possible steps to eradicate their safe haven in Iraq, Syria.
The resolution also reaffirms the UN’s opposition to other terrorist groups, including Al Qaeda.
British United Nations Ambassador Matthew Rycroft, president of the council for November, said on Thursday that the shorter French draft focused on areas of the fight against Islamic State that the Security Council could agree on. He confirmed that the two militants involved in the attack had been killed, although there have been conflicting reports on the number of terrorists involved in the massacre, with eye witnesses reporting that more than a dozen were involved in the attack.
Speaking at the meeting, Vitaly Churkin stressed that the organizers and perpetrators of the terrorist attacks in Paris, as well as those responsible for the destruction of the Russian airliner over the Sinai Peninsula will receive their inevitable punishment.
The resolution approved by the Council also includes an effort to slow the flow of financing to the well-endowed ISIS, which has reaped the benefits of the takeover and sale of oil and antiquities in Iraq and Syria. Greek officials have previously said that a man carrying a Syrian passport with the name Ahmad Al-Mohammad was processed on the island of Leros on the same date, having arrived there from Turkey.
Malian and French special forces responded to the attack.
It was hailed as an “important moment” by Mr Cameron as he seeks backing for United Kingdom air strikes in Syria. Today, the world has united against ISIL (IS).
The vote comes as the global threat posed by extremists was highlighted after gunmen stormed a luxury hotel in Mali, which left at least 27 people dead.
At the same time, the lawyer suggested, if Washington and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation agree to the Russian draft resolution, it will signify a dramatic shift in their policy toward both Syria and Russia.
