United Nations to hold March summit to resettle, place millions of Syrians
The House of Representatives – with votes from nearly four-dozen Democrats – overwhelmingly passed a Republican-backed legislation to block refugees from entering the United States on Thursday, following vocal opposition from more than 31 us governors refusing to accept refugees into their states. The United States has a noble tradition of responding to major wars and conflicts by resettling refugees from across the globe-three million refugees have been safely admitted since 1975.
A few of the eight Democrats come from swing districts where the Syrian refugee issue could factor in next year’s election.
Donald Trump has also asserted that President Obama wants to allow 250,000 Syrian refugees to come to the U.S. But the administration has in fact only agreed to allow 10,000 Syrian refugees in the next year.
Appleby said to “turn our backs” on America’s history of offering safe haven “diminishes our standing and moral leadership in the world and our ability to bring nations together to address this humanitarian crisis”. The basis for this appears to be the fear of 81% that a major terror attack is likely against the United States. “We must take decisive action to show the American people that we are doing all we can to protect them”. Of the Syrians allowed in so far as refugees, 2,098 of them are Muslim while only 53 are Christian.
“Unlike the Republican bill the Democratic alternative applies tough scrutiny to all refugees, not just Syrians and Iraqis, as the Republican bill is limited to”, said House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. They are interviewed in person by Department of Homeland Security officials, undergo medical screenings, and are investigated by US and global intelligence agencies.
The process takes so long that experts said it would be unlikely for an extremist group to rely on a refugee program to sneak someone into the U.S. Terrorist organizations could instead send operatives to America as students or tourists or appeal to people already living in the U.S.to carry out attacks. Despite Senate Democrats’ objection, the fate of the bill remained uncertain in the Senate, as objection to receiving Syrian refugees prevailed in the wake of Paris attacks, where at least 129 were killed and more than 350 were wounded.
Lawmakers and more than half of United States governors this week called for additional review of the processes used to screen refugees that enter into the country.
The debate now shifts to the Senate, and Boozman, a Republican from Rogers, said he expects widespread support. “It needs to stop because the world is watching”, Obama said.
When looking at only terrorism classified as “jihadist”, 80 percent were US citizens at the time of the crime, but 50 percent were born in the U.S.
“We are escaping from the terrorists”, says a visibly anxious Hussam Alroustom, speaking on a rainy November afternoon at a refugee resettlement center in New Jersey. They say we can’t possibly vet all of these people, so we should keep them all out.
