United’s Schweinsteiger charged with violent conduct
Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has deflected sole blame for the team’s lack of goals away from his forward teammates ahead of United’s clash with Wolfsburg.
Schweinsteiger appeared to stick out his left arm and caught Reid in the throat as both players jostled for position in the build-up to a first-half free-kick.
Low, however, has no concerns about Schweinsteiger’s form and still believes the 31-year-old will prove to be a major success at Old Trafford.
A panel of three former referees each reviewed the video footage of the incident and decided Schweinsteiger, who reluctantly accepted the charge, did it deliberately.
Manchester United has up until Thursday (local time) to inform the FA if they intend to appeal the charge.
Schweinsteiger, who joined Manchester United from German champions Bayern Munich in the summer, has thus far made 24 appearances in all competitions for his new employers, scoring once and providing two assists. The incident was not seen by the match officials but was caught on video.
Reid later claimed that the Germany star should have been sent off, saying: ‘It was a red card.
“We at the German Football Association know what we are getting with Bastian”, he said.
The ban means Schweinsteiger will miss games against Bournemouth, Norwich and Stoke City for Louis van Gaal’s side and piles onto the problems now being dealt with in the squad.
Reid was convinced that the World Cup victor deserved a red card when he was questioned about the altercation in his post-game interview, and will undoubtedly agree with the retrospective punishment.
“Today was a massive frustration for us and it’s so disappointing when you dominate a game”, the United defender told MUTV.
