United clinched the game 1-0 courtesy of a Kyle Walker own goal but the lacklustre show prompted critics to question Rooney.
Schmeichel reckons United boss Louis Van Gaal has already proved he doesn’t fully trust Holland goalkeeper Cillessen after replacing him before a penalty shootout at last summer’s World Cup.
De Gea watched on from the stands on Saturday as United beat Spurs and he could do the same again on Friday night against Aston Villa. “It’s the same as Schweinsteiger – Van Gaal knows that he will do what he asks”.
Officials at the club are expecting neither to happen before the transfer window shuts, meaning he will stay.
“Of course we have problems still with the goalkeeper, so we need maybe two more players”.
United would like Barcelona’s Pedro, whose release clause is £22 million, to help bolster the squad for a concerted Premier League title challenge but that won’t dampen the urge to bring in former Tottenham flyer Bale.
“We have a situation that is not favourable for David de Gea, but neither for us and neither for the club that maybe he wants to go (to)”, Van Gaal said, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News.
“Its been talked about for all of this year almost and its annoying that its been taken into the season“. I can see the manager’s point of view.
“We saw in pre-season his focus was not quite there and we made the decision on Wednesday not to play him”.
“It’s always hard, it’s the first time they’ve played at Old Trafford“, said Van Gaal on BT Sport, reckoning that he would celebrate his birthday in his favourite restaurant later. When I have to think of one player, it’s him, as he was the best performer.
The uncertainly over De Gea’s position is filtering through to the other members of United’s goalkeeping contingent. “You (the media) said he has to play in a striker’s position”.
United were linked with Harry Kane last month, with reports suggesting that LVG had put forward a £45million bid on Mauricio Pochettino’s desk.
