United States agency says its response to Flint water crisis too slow

Governor Rick Snyder began his State of the State speech with an apology to the people of Flint and a promise to fix the problems associated with the Water Crisis. “We want to see Snyder go and be held accountable for what he’s done to our city”. Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz says the drinking water crisis in Flint is a “travesty” and represents “a failure at every level of government”.
“People have said how they want things handled with him”, Weaver said Wednesday. “He really did not accept any personal responsibility for this”.
Lawyers have now filed three suits on behalf of Flint residents, as they ask the “state of MI to step up” amidst Flint’s ongoing water crisis.
President Barack Obama signed an emergency declaration Saturday that clears the way for federal aid for Flint, Michigan, which is undergoing a drinking water crisis.
He has faced calls for his resignation, but has refused to step down.
Mr Snyder asked lawmakers to authorise $28m for diagnostic tests, health treatment for children and adolescents, replacement of old fixtures in Flint schools and day care centres and a study of the city’s water pipes.
Pitt added that the response to the federal lawsuit is due February 1, and that may provide some answers, but he encouraged state leaders to act promptly in providing money to residents who have been inconvenienced, sickened or worse by the water debacle.
During his second term, in April 2014, in order to save millions of dollars for buying water from Detroit, he switched the water source for Flint, Michigan from the fresh glacial water of Lake Huron to the Flint River where, says Michael Moore, “toxins from a dozen General Motors and DuPont factories have been dumped for over a hundred years”.
The lead- which can lead to behavior problems and learning disabilities in children and kidney ailments in adults – has left Flint residents unable to drink unfiltered tap water.
Snyder has little choice but to devote much of Tuesday night’s address to the emergency, which has put Flint families at risk for lead exposure and engulfed his administration with criticism. This is White House Press Secretary Joshua Earnest.
Many are blaming his administration for mishandling the situation where the city switched its water supply from the Detroit water system to sourcing it from the Flint River.
Flint returned to the Detroit water system in October and Snyder declared a state of emergency in the city January 5. Rick Snyder activated the National Guard to help the American Red Cross distribute water to Flint residents to help them deal with the lead contamination that is in the City of Flint’s water supply.
Lead poisoning can cause mental and physical development problems.
In response to Clinton’s comments, Snyder went on the defensive Sunday night.
Mayor Mike Duggan took a tour of city public schools last week along with city environmental officials and the head of the city’s main teachers union, the Detroit Federation of Teachers, according to his office and a union spokeswoman.
