United States braces for Florence
In South Carolina, McMaster’s evacuation orders affect about 1 million residents and tourists across eight low-lying counties.
The storm’s first effects were already apparent on barrier islands as unsafe rip currents hit beaches and seawater flowed over a state highway – the harbinger of a storm surge that could wipe out dunes and submerge entire communities.
Mass evacuations were ordered along the U.S. Atlantic Coast as Hurricane Florence, a Category 4 storm and the most powerful to menace the region in almost three decades, barreled toward the region on Tuesday.
Hurricane Florence is now a powerful Category 4 hurricane and is expected to make a risky impact once it makes landfall along the coast of the southeast US later this week.
Virginia Governor Ralph Northam’s office predicted “catastrophic inland flooding, high winds and possible widespread power outages”, cautioning that the deadliest risk would come from flooding.
Forecasts expect 10 to 15 inches (25-38 cm) of rain in the hardest-hit areas, possibly more if the storm stalls over land, as expected, Graham said. It’s estimated that 1 million people will be impacted by Florence’s arrival.

Since 1851, only one hurricane has brought sustained Category-4 winds to North Carolina: Hurricane Hazel in 1954, Colorado State University meteorologist Phil Klotzbach said.
Last year, the United States was hit by three major hurricanes.
