United States federal budget agency under fire from Trump administration over health care
Cotton drew on the Democrats’ loss of control of government in 1994 after House Democrats voted in favor of President Bill Clinton’s proposed B.T.U. tax – a proposed tax on the burning of fuels – a lesson, he thinks, Republicans should keep in mind as they vote on the repeal and replace plan.
“That’s human nature. The fact is, Obamacare is a disaster”, the president said.
“Do not walk the plank and vote for a bill that can not pass the Senate and then have to face the consequences of that vote”, Cotton said.
It fails to correct the features of Obamacare, namely insurance regulations, that drove up health insurance costs and premiums in the first place. It also expands health savings accounts, which are one of the few health-care policies that create an incentive to control costs rather than explode them.
The American Medical Association, the US’s largest group representing doctors, said in a letter to Congress the new plan could hurt certain groups.
The criticism of the CBO from the Trump administration is unusual.
But they can avoid facing up to the negative consequences of their plan for only so long: The CBO will soon issue a report on their proposal, probably this week.
The CBO director is selected by Congress. In a letter addressed to key representatives, American Medical Association (AMA) CEO and executive vice president James L. Madara, MD rejected the AHCA out of concerns that the bill could leave numerous over 20 million patients who gained insurance under the ACA vulnerable to losing their coverage. “They are going to defund Planned Parenthood, deny over two million women the right to choose the health care that they need“, he said.
The House Republican legislation would scrap tax penalties for Americans without health insurance, roll back an expansion of Medicaid insurance for the poor, and replace Obamacare’s income-based subsidies with a system of fixed tax credits to help people buy private insurance on the open market.
Democrats are fiercely opposed to the legislation, which they say will reduce coverage and end up costing patients more money. Rep. Paul Ryan, the Speaker of the House, has said that dire-seeming numbers about millions losing health insurance because of Trumpcare are meaningless, because his plan would give Americans the choice of whether or not to have insurance while Obamacare mandated that they had to. Have you ever seen such an effort in advance of a CBO assessment that’s about to be released to diminish the whole process, to make it look like, “You know what, they were so wrong in the past”.
What little can be gleaned from the Republicans’ replacement measure is not particularly encouraging.
“It truly is a sinking ship”, he said Thursday, referring to what is commonly known as Obamacare.
“So there’s cost that needs to come down, and we believe we’re going to be able to do that through this system. That’s what we told them”, Jordan told Fox News Sunday.
