United States group: N.Korea already dismantling nuclear site
The US price for normalisation – complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation – is one Pyongyang has never before been willing to pay, regarding nuclear weapons as the ultimate guarantee of the regime’s survival.
The commitments came ahead of a summit to be held between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and the US President Donald Trump to discuss a possible end to Pyongyang’s nuclear program.
Pompeo, who has met twice with Kim, described him as well-informed and attuned to western media coverage, a leader “who knows his brief” and what he wants to achieve. “We can deliver that”, he said.
“We’ve done trade-for-trade, moment-for-moment; you give me X, I give you Y; and it has failed repeatedly”, said Pompeo of the history of negotiations surrounding DPRK denuclearization efforts. “This has been the trade-off that has been pending for 25 years”. North Korea is said to be “seriously reviewing” it said.
The secretary said however, that while the administration’s eyes remain open about the Kim regime’s past, “we’re hopeful that this will be different”.
Moon said Monday that the North’s move shows how honest the country is about making the talks between Kim and Trump a success. “I don’t understand why North Korea is so rushed for it”.
A campaign of diplomacy has allowed tensions to ease on the Korean Peninsula, but they were high throughout much of 2017, fueled by North Korea’s missile tests and its advancing nuclear weapons program, as well as US military exercises and Trump’s threatening statements.
North Korea, whose economy has been suffocated for decades by worldwide sanctions imposed by the U.S., was promised by Mike Pompeo on May 11 that “If Chairman Kim chooses the right path, there is a future brimming with peace and prosperity for the North Korea people”.
Kang said for the North it means the pullout of U.S. nuclear weapons from the peninsula, the suspension of the joint South Korea-U.S. military exercises, and assurances from the U.S. that it will not use nuclear weapons against the North.
Bolton has previously made hawkish public comments that supported preemptive USA attacks on North Korea to counteract the threat of their nuclear arsenal. “They’ll have to reveal all locations”.
All of North Korea’s six known nuclear bomb tests have taken place at Punggye-ri, in the northeastern of North Korea where a system of tunnels have been dug under Mount Mantap.
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory is a nuclear research and storage facility that already holds key components from Libya’s nuclear weapons programme. Analysts say that while the closure of the site is important, it doesn’t represent a material step toward full denuclearization.
“Kim Jong-un said during a party meeting on April 20 that (nuclear weapons) are a treasured sword for protecting peace”.
The dismantling ceremony is planned for just under three weeks before June 12, the date Trump is scheduled to meet with Kim Jong Un in Singapore.
