United States man charged with killing S. Korean in 1997 extradited
Lee was initially charged with the killing and sentenced to life in prison, which was later reduced to 20 years in an appeals court.

Patterson and Lee accuse each other of killing Cho. But in 1998, in a retrial ordered by the Supreme Court, Lee was acquitted for lack of evidence.
Patterson fled to the United States a year later after Seoul investigators failed to renew his travel ban – a mistake that sparked a storm of criticism.
It was after the success of the 2009 film “The Case of the Itaewon Homicide”, which prompted public outcry for punishment for the crime suspect, along with complaints from Cho’s family, that the Ministry of Justice reopened the case and requested Patterson’s extradition in 2010. The prosecutors relaunched the probe and this time pointed to Patterson as the real suspect.
The USA citizen finally lost the petition, and was extradited to Seoul. His current whereabouts are as of yet unconfirmed.
Prosecutors cited new evidence that they claimed could prove Patterson was actually the murderer.
The North insists its space programme is purely scientific, but the USA, South Korea and their allies deem any such rocket launch to be a disguised ballistic missile test that violates United Nations resolutions. In a statement of condemnation issued on Wednesday, Pyongyang’s propaganda outlet Uriminzokkiri said, “How can separated families from the North and South meet, and how are North and South Korean authorities to engage in rapprochement when there are [individuals] spreading hatred and loathing between a common people?” Patterson was 18 at the time of the murder and the son of a U.S. Forces Korea civilian employee and a Korean mother.
He was taken straight to a detention center in Seoul since he has already been indicted on murder charges.
The trial for this case is expected to start next month.
Kwon said in addition to information, household products from South Korea including those used for feminine hygiene have become popular in the North since they have been delivered by balloon.
