United States police hunting man who shot anti-Trump protester
Almost 300 Tucsonans took the streets of downtown Saturday, Nov. 12, to protest the election of Donald Trump to the presidency, becoming the latest in a growing number of demonstrations across the country.
The police force of the city was on high alert, barricading the entrance of Trump Tower and many storefronts in case the protest turns violent. Some demonstrations have broken out in front of Trump properties.
Hundreds met in Union Square Park to march to Trump Tower in Manhattan, where the next president lives and runs businesses.
States including Iowa, Maine, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Vermont also held consecutive nights of protests. The latest round of protests occurred in NY. One police vehicle was also damaged. “I’m going to fight for my parents, even if it kills me”.
A police news release says the man got out of his vehicle and fired multiple shots injuring the person before fleeing, likely in his vehicle.
Less insouciant, more policed – France is a changed place since Islamic State extremists killed 130 people in the country’s deadliest attacks a year ago.
One officer was hospitalised for injuries suffered during the protest.
Los Angeles police arrested five people downtown during an anti-Trump protest that wound down early Sunday. A small protest also took place midday Sunday in Springfield, Massachusetts.
In Indianapolis, demonstrators on Saturday threw rocks at police, slightly injuring two officers, said Police Chief Troy Riggs.
Thousands are expected to join protests throughout the weekend in L.A., San Francisco, Las Vegas and overseas.
In addition to the anti-Trump protests, there have been reports of racially charged incidents in schools and communities across the country.
The protests largely have been peaceful.
The Portland Police Bureau said it called for a city bus to transport the arrested protesters to a station.
In Los Angeles on Thursday night, police arrested about 185 people, mostly for blocking roadways or being juveniles out past curfew, according to police.
In his post-election victory speech, Trump said he would be a president for all Americans, and that it was “time to come together as one united people. And this is like a heartbreak of the American dream for me”, Werzola said. And this is so important to me. “People are angry, and so what I want this to be is for us to release that anger and for us to be able to move to a progressive movement”.
But many are not convinced. Friday’s protesters began their demonstration at a daytime “love rally” at Washington Square Park, an event that organizers said was anti-Trump rather but its goal was to tell those who he has targeted in his speech that they are welcome in this country. Many NPR readers and listeners fear that race relations will deteriorate, despite Trump’s words.
