University of Alabama students arrested on hazing allegations
They were being held in the Tuscaloosa County Jail on $1,000 bond each.
School spokesman Chris Bryant said the arrests Wednesday followed a thorough joint investigation by the University of Alabama Police Department and the UA Office of Student Conduct.
The university didn’t go into details about the hazing charges, but its believed that the brothers forced initiates to stand in buckets of ice and salt, leading to burns on their feet. All were charged with three counts of hazing, except Powers, who was charged with one count.
Colter K. Anderson, 21, of Dallas; and John Patrick Buckley, 21, of Houston each face three hazing charges, according to UAPD.
When the chapter president learned of the incident, he took the initiative to conduct an investigation and then contacted the University to report his findings.
“The University of Alabama will not tolerate hazing and takes allegations and incidents of hazing very seriously”, said Tim Hebson, dean of students, in an emailed statement to Bryant. These interim sanctions include “no social events and no new member activities”.
Phi Gamma Delta was previously reprimanded by the University of Alabama in 2012. In response to the arrests, the national director of the fraternity, Bill Martin, said the organization has prohibited hazing for a long time.
Pennsylvania State University’s Kappa Delta Rho fraternity was accused of running an invitation-only Facebook page that showed hazing rituals, drug deals and naked women who appeared to be passed out. “Any member who engages in hazing does so out of defiance of the Fraternity’s position and not ignorance of it”.
