Unlikely path for foes hoping to dump Trump at convention
That’s a question many key Republicans are wrestling with, and it has left them trying to walk a very fine line. The solution only comes with repudiation of Trump, success of diverse candidates and an empathetic agenda that demonstrates Republicans care about all Americans, not just rich, white males.
If Donald Trump does adopt a positive view of America that is inclusive of all Americans, he might be able to resonate with a majority of voters.
“To everyone who voted for me throughout this campaign: thank you”.
Trump’s pitch came on one of the toughest days of his unpredictable campaign, as top Republican leaders and donors denounced as racist and troubling his comments about a federal judge’s ethnicity. “And right now the Republican Party is facing – the plane is headed towards the mountain after the last 72 hours”.
“They ought to get together and let the convention decide”, he said. In his statement on the matter earlier, he said he’d been “misconstrued” and that he was “justified in questioning” treatment by the judge.
Many Republicans didn’t see it that way, and the desire of his party to unify behind him looked at risk of unraveling. House Speaker Paul Ryan, who only recently endorsed Trump, called the comments from his party’s nominee “textbook” racism. Soon after, a GOP senator who had previously indicated support for Trump withdrew his backing. They all urged Trump, in one way or another, to ratchet down his rhetoric in recent weeks, even as he insisted that he’s getting a raw deal from the press. But could this be his undoing?Yes, I probably should blog about the history made as a woman clinches the Presidential nomination of a major political party in the United States for the first time (very tardy, considering other nations have elected women leaders in previous decades!), but I can’t resist posting about the newly “tamed” Donald Trump.
Kirk suffered a stroke in 2012 and often uses a wheelchair. Tim Scott aptly called Mr. Trump’s previous and all too accurately construed comments about Judge Curiel “racially toxic”, and Sen.
Kendal Unruh, a Cruz delegate and Trump opponent from Colorado, said Friday she’s seeking support for one such proposal. “You can’t do it, you gotta go attack it”, Hewitt said.
“He’s going to have more allies among Democrats than he will among Republicans, which will drive a good portion of that Republican base even more up the wall”, he said.
“I think I will get along with the politicians actually”, he said. Instead, he mentioned having Mexican friends and repeated his accusation that Curiel would be biased against Trump because of his “reported associations with certain professional organizations”.
The far-fetched idea is the latest reflection of a campaign cycle that has been anything but ordinary, and stems from a continuing dissatisfaction among some conservative stalwarts with how Trump is behaving and running his campaign.
“It is repugnant, un-American and a slap in the face to our increasingly diverse judiciary and to all of us who participate in this democracy”, Murguía said of Trump’s comments.
Other prospects for Republican pickups include districts where incumbents alienated organized labor by siding with President Barack Obama on trade policy.
Clinton hopes to deny Trump that path not only by galvanizing Jewish voters, but also the state’s massive Hispanic and Latino population, as well, who account for 23% of the population. So a further decline this year – which is far from guaranteed – would still not be enough for Trump to win the state.
After Trump met with fundraisers and CEO’s at the Four Seasons in NY on Thursday, Trump’s national finance chairman, Steven Mnuchin, told CNN’s Erin Burnett on “OutFront” that the meeting “couldn’t have gone better”.
When asked for reaction to the departure by Labrosse and Canestrino, Schepisi said she was sympathetic but that she would always remain a Republican. And, she will be doing it as third-party candidates-like former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, the Libertarian Party nominee-try to attract highly disgruntled Sanders supporters to their own causes.
Meanwhile, as Democrats continue with their overt campaign to taint Trump as a racist, xenophobe, sexist pig, it remains to be seen who will win the hearts-and votes-of the general election public.
