Unseeded Republic of Ireland await Euro 2016 play-off fate
England was the only team to qualify for France without dropping a single point.
They’ll feel slightly robbed by the late Turkey goal that consigned them to the play-offs but the Hungarians have no complaints given that they could only take one point from six against their group’s bottom placed side; Greece, and had only really been leading the race for the best third place spot by virtue of Greece’s poor results against the Faroe Islands.
The draw takes place on Sunday morning with Norway, Denmark and Slovenia joining the Republic as unseeded teams.
Ireland will face one of Sweden, Ukraine, Hungary and Bosnia-Herzegovina in the play-offs for Euro 2016 following the final round of qualifying matches played this evening.
O’Neill will be attending Sunday’s draw in Nyon.
When are the play-offs?
The first leg ties are scheduled to take place on 12/13/14 November with the second leg games on 15/16/17 November.
The losses, which came against Spain (2) and Slovakia, all finished 1-0 and Mykhailo Fomenko’s men only conceded four goals over the entire campaign.
England and the other 23 teams that have reached France 2016 will find out who they will be grouped with next summer on Saturday, December 12, in Paris at 5pm. The top two in each plus the four best third-placed teams will advance to the knockout phase.
Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko, on loan in Serie A this season, was their top scorer in qualifying with seven goals, and they’ve also got Roma midfielder Miralem Pjanic, Everton’s Muhames Besic and Chelsea back-up goalkeeper Asmir Begovic in their ranks. The group stage will run until June 22, with the round of 16 games between June 25 and 27, quarter-finals between June 30 and July 3, semi-finals July 6-7 and final on July 10.
