Urrutia HR in 9th inning gives Orioles 5-4 win over Mets
Orioles starter Ubaldo Jimenez allowed three runs, five hits and four walks in five innings.
The Cuban outfielder, recalled from Class AAA Norfolk before Saturday’s game, has found a home in the Orioles’ starting lineup since, making his fifth straight start in Wednesday’s interleague game against the New York Mets.
Urrutia broke a ninth-inning tie with a drive into the seats in left field, and the Baltimore Orioles ended a nine-game losing streak against the New York Mets with a 5-4 victory Wednesday night.
The Mets (64-56) have now lost four of their last five games and could only hope that they maintained their 4.5-game lead over the Nationals in the division.
Syndergaard began his bullpen session about 10 minutes later than normal on the road to simulate playing at home, where he takes the mound immediately after his pregame warmups, but he was on the brink of disaster in the first inning.
Hitless in his first three at bats on the night, Urrutia hit Chris Torres’s 1-2 pitch the opposite way over the left-field fence to give the Orioles a 5-4 walk-off win.
The Orioles have lately shown a flair for the dramatic.
Jimenez walked three in the fourth inning – one baserunner was erased when Schoop made a nice lunging catch and tag on Lucas Duda’s attempt to steal second base – but Flores’ two-out RBI single put the Mets up 2-0. “I am not going to complain about the offense, but just trying to get the comfort back on the mound it takes more time”. I feel every bit as confident as I do at home.
Syndergaard loaded the bases with no outs in the opening inning.
New York still leads the all-time series 22-10, but this one hurt because it stalled the Mets’ bid to solidify their hold on first place in the NL East.
Syndergaard went out to warm up later and came in to the dugout about two minutes before first pitch.
Adam Jones walked to load the bases after Manny Machado and Gerardo Parra had doubled and singled in succession. When Murphy singled in the fifth, it gave the Mets a 3-1 lead.
After a brief chat with catcher Travis d’Arnaud, however, Syndergaard battled back. Hitting a game-winning home run for a team in the middle of a playoff run is pretty special. Steve Clevenger followed up with a single to chase the right-hander from the game. “Actually in the first inning, I thought he threw the ball good”. Opponents were hitting. 300 off him in the sixth.
Jonathan Schoop has talked about turning the page on arguably his worst game of the season on Tuesday, when the sure-handed second baseman made three costly defensive miscues that played a key role in the Orioles’ two-run loss to the Mets at Camden Yards.
With 96 pitches, that was it for Syndergaard. Verrett, who may be needed to start Sunday in Colorado if Matt Harvey gets skipped because of innings limits, threw a total of six pitches. Adam Jones crushed a solo homer off him in the seventh to tie the game at 4-4.
