US airman who thwarted French train attack stabbed
Doctors at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento say an global hero suffered three serious stab wounds to his torso.
The stabbing happened about 12:45 a.m. near 21st and K streets, Sacramento police said.
The fight was caught by surveillance cameras at a nearby A&P liquor store, a clerk there said.
Say what you will about wrong place, wrong time – Spencer Stone is one tough guy.
Police said the altercation began outside a bar in the California capital’s midtown district, a gentrifying area with many popular clubs, restaurants and art galleries that still retains a few rough edges.
No arrests have been made so far.
“The assault does not appear to be a random act”, Bernard added.
They do not believe the stabbing to be terrorism-related, nor do they think it is a hate crime – Stone had been in a gay club with friends earlier in the evening, there for a so-called “Straight Night” when the altercation spilled into the street.
Video from the aftermath of the attack showed Mr Stone ignoring blood pouring from his wounds as he tended to another passenger, who was bleeding from a gunshot wound.
“The suspects in this crime are two male Asian adults”, Sacramento Deputy Police Chief Ken Bernard told reporters. The assailants are believed to have driven away in a dark gray or black 2009-2012 Toyota Camry.
Stone has since been brought to a hospital, has undergone surgery, and is now recovering in the intensive care unit. However, he declined to discuss any details about the surgery or whether any of Stone’s vital organs were damaged.
“His injuries were significant”, said Dr. Douglas Kirk, the hospital’s chief medical officer. The family of Stone has been overwhelmed with the concern shown for him and said, “The family of Airman Spencer Stone appreciates the outpouring of love and support”, in a statement, reports the Guardian.
For his role in disarming a gunman on a Paris-bound train in August, Stone received the Legion of Honor from France’s President François Hollande, and the Airman’s Medal from Defense Secretary Ashton Carter in Washington.
Ayoub El-Khazzani, a man with ties to radical Islam, had boarded the train with a Kalashnikov rifle, a pistol and a box cutter.
The USA airman who helped to stop a terror attack on a French train during the summer, survived serious injuries in a fight in his home state, California.
