US, Australia embassies warn of Malaysia terror attack
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Noor Rashid Ibrahim said the police acted fast in detaining the suspects after the terror alert was issued.
The U.S. and Australian embassies in Malaysia have warned of a potential terrorist attack at a popular hawker street in the capital.
Malaysiakini found nothing untoward at the Bukit Bintang area, where Jalan Alor is located.
It is unknown if the foreign mission had issued the warning based on reliable intelligence reports or merely based on past occurrences of militant attacks during holy events of Muslims such as Hari Raya Aidiladha.
A tourist walks past Malaysia’s famous eatery street, Jalan Alor, a popular tourist spot in Kuala Lumpur on Sept 25.
For all other locations, the U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur reminds US citizens of the need for caution and awareness of personal security, it added.
Authorities reportedly said that the threat was connected with the arrests of several militants linked to the Islamic State group.
They are being detained to facilitate investigations under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012.
The advice from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade comes after the United States government issued an alert relating to a specific threat in Kuala Lumpur’s Jalan Alor and surrounding areas on Thursday September 24. No attacks have occurred in Malaysia.
