US celebrates Wambach’s final game, but falls 1-0 to China
Wambach, 35, will be remembered for her unflinching determination to advance the cause of American, and women’s, soccer on and off the pitch.
Wambach also pledged that if she got into sports broadcasting she would be as outspoken all the time.
Abby Wambach is playing the last worldwide game of her career on Wednesday, when the United States plays host to China. That’s the most goals in global play on either the men’s or women’s side.
“I would definitely fire Jurgen, ‘ Wambach said in an interview on the ‘Bill Simmons Podcast”.
“But I just think that this experiment that U.S. Soccer has given Jurgen isn’t one that, personally, I’m into”. “They’ve also motivated me and challenged me to be a better person off the field and I think that’s something that I value the most”.
She questioned whether enough young American players were coming through the US soccer system and whether Jermaine Jones and Fabian Johnson, who were born in Germany, should have been picked to play for the USMNT.
Wambach had a different message for US Soccer when it comes to the men’s team. “Long ago when I told Jill I was going to be retiring from the game, I really didn’t want to tell anybody”. But with the American players desperately trying to funnel the ball to Wambach to get the game’s all-time leading scorer a curtain call goal, the US attack was distorted. A few months later, the USA looked down right terrible in the CONCACAF Cup against Mexico, losing out on a chance to go to the 2017 Confederations Cup.
Abby Wambach has been sent off in style. She holds the record for most multi-goal games (44) and goals scored in a match (5), and her header against Brazil in 2011 will live in USWNT folk lore forever.
Wambach retires just months after finally adding a World Cup winner’s medal to her collection, even if she only came on as a substitute late in the final against Japan.
In short, Wambach is one of the most accomplished players in the history of soccer. With her final match, and her controversial comments about Jurgen Klinsmann, why he should be fired and his use of “foreign guys,” she has gone off Twitter, Instagram, all of it. She credited coach Jill Ellis and the coaching staff for letting her finish her career on her teams.
“I would give up all my individual awards for what we just did tonight and it’s the truth”, she said in the moments afterward.
