US, China call for new resolution on N. Korea
He said China and the United States should manage the sensitive issues in a constructive manner to prevent them from interfering the bilateral cooperation. “In fairness what we’re going to talk about in the next days on an accelerated basis”.
Wang made the remarks at a press briefing after meeting with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who is on a two-day visit to China.
The U.S. says it takes no position on the claims but says developments in the South China Sea are a national security interest. “We can not accept the allegation that China’s words are not being matched by actions”.
Mr Kerry called on China to cease building and land reclamation in regions that were contested. “If this had been so, this would have meant that U.N. Security Council resolutions limiting the delivery of such elements to North Korea are ineffective and that additional materials, without which this bomb can’t be created, are getting into North Korea”, he said.
The announcement has rattled relations between North Korea and its neighbor.
Foreigners detained in North Korea are regularly required to provide taped or written confessions, which they generally retract after their release. “This mistake shouldn’t be repeated relative to North Korea”.
Yang Moo-jin, a professor at the University of North Korean Studies, said the North seems to give off the impression that it is more focused on boosting the economy in a bid to water down its nuclear aspiration. Instead, China would push for a resumption of disarmament talks. Furthermore, for several years, the United States has effectively ignored the North Korean nuclear issue, which has only made it worse.
“The United States should not bring elements of its nuclear arsenal (to the Korean Peninsula)”.
South Korea and the United States blamed North Korea for a 2014 cyber attack on Sony Pictures that crippled its systems and led to the leaks of unreleased films and employee data. US officials and nuclear experts have cast doubt on that claim, but if true, it would represent a major step forward in North Korea’s nuclear capabilities.
Lavrov asserted that the Six-Party Talks are the sole solution for the nuclear issue, and expressed opposition to potential escalations from the U.S.’s military’s side. Reaching this kind of great compromise will require, at the least, an agreement by the United States and China to partially suspend the New Great Game.
Kerry reportedly urged Beijing to discontinue oil exports to the North and North Korean mineral imports.
“In Asia, there are not only your allies, but also many important countries”.
Then challenging China further, Kerry said, “All nations, particularly those who seek a global leadership role, or have a global leadership role, have a responsibility to deal with this threat”. America’s policy of “strategic patience”, like China’s policy of “friendly persuasion”, has succeeded only in allowing North Korea to advance its nuclear ambitions. Wang likely remained hesitant to take such drastic measures, fearing the possibility of North Korea’s destabilization.
