US confirms Iran tested nuclear-capable ballistic missile
That resolution also says that once the deal is in effect countries will be allowed to transfer missile technology and heavy weapons to Iran on a case-by-case basis with council approval.
According to info the administration has so far, the evaluation seems to be in violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1929, which stipulates that Iran can not engage in any tasks related to ballistic missiles. White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Tuesday that there are “indications” that the test violated the ban.
Earnest stressed, however, that those violations are “entirely separate” from the historic nuclear deal reached between Iran and world powers, which is aimed at preventing its development of nuclear weapons.
The U.S. said on Friday that the test firing breached a 2010 UN Security Council Resolution that prohibits Iran from testing the category of missile fired last weekend.
“This test furthers Iran’s ICBM program”, and “the sole objective of an Iranian ICBM is to enable delivery of a nuclear weapon to the United States”, the Senators warned in their letter.
Iran, however, said the launch did not violate UN Security Council resolutions. Iran typically operates such missile bases in hilly or mountainous areas, each site is fed through multiple entry and exit points; launch pads are often located under roofed structures which may also “hide” plain surfaces for deception. To admit Iranian wrongdoing at this point is to admit the foolishness of his desperate efforts to get the deal, including the many inappropriate concessions he made and the obvious requests, such as the release of American prisoners, that he failed to make.
An Iranian news outlet broadcast images on Wednesday of an underground missile facility that is said to be one of many that are spread throughout the country, with Iran acknowledging and publicizing their existence for the first time.
“This is a sample of our massive missile bases”, he said, adding that “a new and advanced generation of long-range liquid and solid fuel missiles” will replace the current weapons in 2016.
“The missiles in various ranges are mounted on the launchers in all bases and (are) ready to be launched”. House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Md., issued a statement Monday warning against the failure of the United States and other nations to enforce U.N. ballistic missile sanctions. The launch pads are quickly prepared for new missiles, as they provide merely the level surface for standard trailer-mounted erector-launchers.
