US dollar may soon collapse as world reserve currency, John Kerry says
She said a congressional vote against the deal would allow Iran to continue “destabilizing activities” while pursuing nuclear weapons.
He said the U.S. had enough intelligence capacity to know what Iran would be doing and that the military option would always remain on the table if needed.
At least eight House Democrats, including New York Representative Eliot Engel, and that state’s senior Democratic senator, Charles Schumer, have announced they will oppose the agreement.
Kerry said it is a “good deal” that “gets the job done”.
Gerson quoted former White House official Michael Doran, now a scholar at the Hudson Institute, who pointed out that when the Obama administration talks about pushing back against Iran’s aggression, it means that it will support the militaries of Israel and America’s Arab allies, but will take no action itself.
Secretary of State John Kerry offered a new warning about the consequences if Congress rejects the Iran nuclear deal, saying that could add to worldwide sentiment to curtail the US dollar as the global reserve currency.
“The Europeans, the Russians, the Chinese, they’re going to say, ‘we stuck with the Americans, we agreed with the Americans, we hammered out this agreement, I guess their president can’t make foreign policy.’ That’s a very bad signal to send in a quickly moving and oftentimes risky world“.
Schumer, the first Senate Democrat to emerge publicly in opposition to the deal, also warned against the “snapback” provisions designed to reimpose sanctions should Iran cheat the deal, calling them “complicated and awkward”.
Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., the presumptive leader-in-waiting of Senate Democrats, said he was opposed.
Marine Gen. James Cartwright, former Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Joseph P. Hoar, former head of the U.S. Central Command; and Gen. Merrill McPeak and Gen. Lloyd W. Newton of the Air Force are among signatories to the letter which includes other retired general and flag officers from every branch of service.
“There is a separate and specific UN resolution that prohibits them from sending weapons to the [Shiite] militia in Iraq”, he said.
“I don’t think the choice of the next Senate leader is going to be based on any single vote”.
Schumer’s opposition was seen as a blow to the Obama administration.
Schumer has reportedly phoned dozens of his Democratic colleagues in order to explain his decision-making process regarding the nuclear agreement.
The group, called Veterans Against the Deal, argues that the Iran deal would cause more war, not less – by unfreezing billions in Iranian assets and providing the regime with more money to fund terrorist activities in the Middle East.
The top American diplomat also challenged those who have criticized the length of the deal’s restrictions on Iranian enrichment of material that can be used in nuclear warheads and other elements of its program.
