US election 2016: Trump and Sanders win New Hampshire
Tuesday’s outcomes would have been almost unthinkable not long ago. In doing so, she implied that her gender trumped her years as first lady, USA senator and secretary of state.
Larry Sanders said the race to win the Democrat nomination is going to be “very competitive” and the “Clintons are going to get very dirty” in their tactics.
New Hampshire is the second state to choose delegates in the long nomination battle following last week’s Iowa caucuses, which were won by Mr Cruz for the Republicans and Mrs Clinton for the Democrats.
Republican US presidential candidate Donald Trump reacts at his 2016 New Hampshire presidential primary night rally in Manchester, New Hampshire.
Trump has dominated the Republican race for months, but time after time politicians and political observers questioned whether the NY billionaire could translate his populist appeal into electoral success.
With 90 percent of precincts reporting, Trump swept 35 percent of the vote to Kasich’s 16 percent, with Iowa victor Ted Cruz at 12 percent, narrowly ahead of former Florida governor Jeb Bush and Rubio.
Marco Rubio’s underwhelming performance in New Hampshire eliminates the prospect the Florida senator might emerge as the Republican establishment’s favored alternative as the race heads into SC and the Super Tuesday states.
With 89 per cent of the vote counted in the Democratic primary, Sanders led Clinton by a margin of 60 percent to 38.4 percent. Having said that, with neither candidate winning in the Iowa caucuses, the NH primary was expected to be an acid test of whether Sanders and Trump would actually make their vocal support count; by all accounts, both candidates have been able to do so with some flair.
A logjam of Republican candidates were in a dead heat for third place.
“Together, we have sent the message that will echo from Wall Street to Washington”, Sanders told his jubilant supporters in Concord Tuesday night. Trump carried a majority of those who said they wanted an outsider to win.
The remarks by Albright, the first woman to serve as secretary of state, and others by feminist icon Gloria Steinem were assailed as disparaging by young women supporters of Sanders.
The large Republican field was winnowed after Iowa, but there remains a crowded grouping of more traditional candidates, including Rubio and the governors.
Now, Senator Sanders and I both want to get secret, unaccountable money out of politics, and let’s remember, let’s remember, Citizens United, one of the worst Supreme Court decisions in our country’s history, was actually a case about a right-wing attack on me and my campaign. As soon as the polls in New Hampshire closed Tuesday night, the Clinton campaign released a memo looking forward to the 28 races that occur in March. “As a public servant, it requires me to do all that I can to ensure that every person lives with dignity and security”.
In his victory speech Sanders said he hoped that he and Clinton would engage in an “issue-oriented” campaign, an invitation that she is likely to welcome (especially if it includes a discussion of foreign policy, which isn’t Sanders’ strong suit). And Sanders and Clinton were evenly divided among women, a major setback for a candidate who aims to become the nation’s first female president. Clinton is well positioned to build a “strong – potentially insurmountable – delegate lead next month”, it added.
