US Election 2016: Trump seals Republican nomination
But while Gov. Christie didn’t address the Republican National Convention as the party’s new presidential nominee Tuesday night – or as that nominee’s running mate – he might have given the same speech if he were.
Christie recounted Clinton’s actions on Libya, Syria, Russia, China and Cuba as evidence that she has bungled foreign policy repeatedly over the years.
On Tuesday night, the RNC will transition from “Make America Safe Again” to “Make America Work Again”, which likely will degenerate to similarly paranoid incitement: Most minorities are lazy, but the ones who aren’t will take your jobs.
Speaker after speaker bashed Clinton – on her email use as secretary of state, on the Benghazi attack, on gun rights and more.
“We have an alternative”. We have a man who wants to lead us.
Trump himself briefly appeared in a videotaped statement: “This is a movement, but we have to go all the way”, he said. “Tonight, as a former federal prosecutor, I welcome the opportunity to hold Hillary Rodham Clinton accountability for her performance and character”. “And I’m going to be specific, so you can render your verdict on the basis of the facts”. “Just asking. I think it is a question he should have to answer”. “You take them from the political appointee side into the civil service side, in order to try to set up… roadblocks for your successor, kind of like when all the Clinton people took all the Ws off the keyboard when George Bush was coming into the White House”.
One by one, he ticked off nations where Clinton, as secretary of state, had overseen American involvement that ultimately produced mixed results.
– In Iran, she launched the negotiations that brought about the worst nuclear deal in history.
The parade of speakers has ended for Tuesday at 10 p.m. but we’ll continue to update this post as news develops. “Guilty”, the crowd cheered.
“We have an alternative”, Christie said.
Clinton’s campaign quickly reacted to Christie’s speech. He was the 2012 convention’s keynote speaker when former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney was nominated for president.
“Governor Christie embraced the role of attack dog with relish and even joy”.
Mrs Clinton’s comments came as Republicans meet in Cleveland for the second day of their national convention, where delegates are expected to officially select Mr Trump as their party’s nominee for the autumn election.
Christie has consistently been criticized – and mocked – for his decision to back Trump and his ardent support of the candidate. Former Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson said one of the most unsafe narratives being advanced by some in our own party is the notion that however awful a Hillary Clinton administration may be, the effects will be temporary or harmless.
