US forward Alex Morgan has knee surgery
Morgan has 52 goals in 91 appearances for the United States.
It was apparent that something was amiss with Morgan following the Thorns 1-0 loss to Sky Blue FC on Saturday, as Thorns head coach Paul Riley was coy about her status when speaking to the media following the match, per reports.
Portland Thorns’ forward Alex Morgan will be out of action for at least three to four weeks after having knee surgery, the team said. The opening match of the tour will take place on Sunday, August 16, against Costa Rica at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. Fans can still purchase tickets to see the world champions live.
In October 2014 at World Cup qualifying, Morgan sprained her left ankle and did not return to competitive action until February 2015. Morgan also scored the winning goal in the quarterfinal match against Colombia.
While the injury in her left knee was resolved, irritation in her right knee led to the need for her to undergo surgery.
She will immediately start rehabilitation with the team medical staff at Providence Sports Care Center. At that time, Morgan appeared confident that she was going to be ready to go on June 8, which was when the USA played their first game of the World Cup tournament, which was against Australia.
