US general confident North Korean missile can be intercepted
Kim Jong-un and North Korean elites understand that they can not win a war with South Korea, the United States and Japan.
Talks about North Korea are expected to feature high on the agenda of talks on Thursday between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. And the Trump administration, like administrations before it, views North Korea’s pursuit of intercontinental missiles capable of reaching San Francisco or Los Angeles as a justification for war.
Experts and officials in the South and the United States believe Pyongyang is still some time away from mastering all the technology needed for an operational ICBM system, such as re-entry into the atmosphere and subsequent missile guidance.
This meeting, coinciding with a tense situation on the Korean Peninsula, has led to speculation of imminent provocations from North Korea.
On Wednesday, it fired a newly developed missile into the sea, this time on the eve of the first meeting between President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping.
Keane said President Trump is going to be diplomatic, but he isn’t afraid to urge China to take sides.
Cheong Seong-chang, a senior research fellow at Sejong Institute outside Seoul, said that could come in the form of another nuclear or ICBM test after the summit.
North Korea has been pursuing its nuclear and missile programs at an unprecedented pace since previous year, with an aim to expand its deterrence against Washington and diversify its line-up of nuclear-equipped missiles, another expert said.
The North successfully fired four ballistic missiles simultaneously in Japan’s direction in February – six months after test-firing a submarine-launched missile 500km towards its near-neighbour. The nation agreed with the US that year to extend the maximum range of its missiles from 185 miles.
“We know that North Korea’s missile capability has improved considerably”, said Itsunori Onodera, another former defense minister in the Abe administration and the chairman of an LDP committee.
South Korea is protected under an American security umbrella and is home to thousands of United States troops.
Graham, meanwhile, said North Korea and the U.S. are mirroring each other’s behavior at the moment.
North Korea with its missile launches probably wants to create attention and use it as leverage for concessions, but Tillerson with his statement has sent a stern message that the United States won’t be a party to it, South Korean experts said. The last one, on March 22, exploded shortly after launch.
The United States and South Korea agreed on Thursday to proceed with the deployment of an advanced USA missile defense system that has angered China, a day after North Korea’s latest test launch drew condemnation across the volatile region.
“They can not stop now and they are under heavy sanctions anyway”, said Koh, the professor. Kaspersky reportedly supplied evidence that Pyongyang was also directly responsible for hacks in over a dozen other nations and that the cash was likely used to fund North Korea’s nuclear weapons program.
