US government shutdown ends after Senate reaches a deal on federal funding
“I’m glad to see Senate Minority Leader Schumer come to his senses and persuade his colleagues to provide the votes to fund our government including our military and health care for children”. That’s a little under three weeks from now. Beyond that, there aren’t a lot of details. “We will make a long-term deal on immigration if, and only if, it is good for our country”, he added.
“Winning is ensuring we have a process in place to deal with expiration of DACA, as these young people know no other home than the United States”. We’ll find out by February 8 whether there was any point at all to the battle of the last few days.
What happened was a nearly three-day partisan standoff over something almost every leader claims to a want – a bill protecting young immigrants brought to the US illegally as children. Without congressional action, the program will end in March.
The measure funds the government till February 8, before which the Democrats and Republicans need to agree to a long- term solution to the government funding and on issues related to illegal immigration.
The three-day shutdown, the first since 2013, cast a shadow over the first anniversary of Trump’s presidential inauguration on Saturday and forced him to cancel a planned weekend trip to his Mar-a-Lago resort in the state of Florida.
LIASSON: The White House feels very confident that they won this round.
“They say, ‘Let’s build a wall to keep us safe, ‘” he said.
Flake said Sunday night he was now a “yes” on the funding bill and it was his hope that six or seven more moderate Democrats would come on board to get the continuing resolution over the finish line – to 60 votes – to end the shutdown.
Expect Democrat leaders to use the DACA issue for more political theater.
Trump agreed to the outlines of the deal, Schumer claimed, before backing out. I think what – people are wondering why the president wasn’t more involved in the conversation.
“He called the White House yesterday and said it’s over”, Illinois Sen.
SARAH HUCKABEE SANDERS: Look; what the president did clearly worked.
The vote was returned with 81 in favour and 18 opposed, with Democrats providing 33 of the votes in favour.
The opportunity for a compromise exists: Essentially, it would involve tougher border-security measures and tighter legal immigration policies along with provisions protecting certain classes of illegal immigrants, including DACA enrollees, from deportation.
