US Governors to Fight Obama on Relocating Guantanamo Prisoners to America
U.S. Senator Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) spoke with U.S. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter about the Pentagon’s assessment of the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth as a potential site to relocate terrorists held at the detention centers at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base (GITMO). Other civilian sites also reportedly are under consideration for detainees, which include suspected terrorists.

And just this week Governor Nikki Haley said that any attempt to move detainees to South Carolina would be a “waste of time”.
“For heaven’s sake, how is it a good idea to ever bring an enemy combatant to the American soil unnecessarily”, the South Carolina Republican said Tuesday on Fox News Channel’s “Your World with Neil Cavuto.”
South Carolina and Kansas are sovereign states with excellent military installations, and we are proud of the men and women in uniform, and their families, who sacrifice for us every single day and call our states home. Ross said. “Only those locations that can hold detainees at a maximum security level will be considered”.
In response to President Obama’s recent announcement that his administration is moving forward with its plan to transfer detainees at Guantanamo Bay to facilities within the U.S., Sens. The Senate legislation, however, allows the restrictions to be lifted if the White House submits a plan to close the facility and it’s approved by Congress. House and Senate negotiators are working to reconcile the two bills. About 52 of the 116 current detainees have been cleared for release.
Indeed, the work is slow going.
And it’s against this backdrop that some congressional Republicans are starting to panic.
“We will not let the president ignore the realities of terrorism”, said Roberts and Scott.
“Any detainee transfer from Guantanamo Bay to the United States would be a violation of federal law”, Haley and Brownback wrote in their letter.
In the letter Haley and Brownback said “We will not be part of any illegal and ill-advised action by this Administration, especially when that action relates to importing terrorists into our states”.
