US House votes to repeal, replace Obamacare, Senate battle looms
Obamacare brought health insurance coverage to millions of Americans.
In a meeting with President Trump Tuesday, Upton said he told the him “in no uncertain terms” that he would only vote for the bill if it maintained coverage for pre-existing conditions. “We’re going to finish it off and we’re going to go on to a lot of other things”.
Meanwhile, Democrats warned that repealing and replacing ObamaCare will leave Americans worse off.
U.S. Sen. Joe Donnelly, D-Ind., called the bill “disastrous”, said he has a great deal of respect for Upton, but $8 billion wouldn’t be almost enough to cover the increased premiums faced by people with pre-existing conditions who let their coverage lapse. At the top of the list: Less coverage, higher costs and overall confusion about what’s in the bill.
Democrats defended Obama’s law, one of his crowning domestic achievements, for expanding coverage to 20 million Americans and forcing insurers to offer more generous benefits. Or we can take action to return control of health care from Washington back to the states and restore the free market so Americans can access quality, affordable health care options. With such a waiver, the Journal reported, “states could be freed from a regulation mandating that they cover 10 specific types of health services, including maternity care, prescription drugs, mental health treatment, and hospitalization”.
“By choosing sides with Donald Trump in giving tax breaks to millionaires, Jeff Denham has given the people of this district grave concerns about his ability to represent us”, Robertson said. Except for this time, they are gutting critical consumer protections like the ban on dropping coverage because of pre-existing conditions.
“The bill that Republicans passed today is an absolute disaster”.
The 217-213 vote is a significant victory for Mr Trump, who repeatedly promised during his campaign to repeal and replace Obamacare. “In 2010, it was largely Democrats who paid the price for their votes to approve the Affordable Care Act”, Borick said.
Republican senator Bob Corker said there was no way the healthcare bill would receive a quick vote in the Senate, and predicted senators would spend “at least a month” studying it. “I hope that my colleagues in the Senate will put the health of the American people over politics, and reject this misguided legislation”. Instead, they chose to craft it behind closed doors with no transparency for the people they were elected to serve.
“Many of us have been waiting seven years to cast this vote”, Ryan added before the House vote. In the end, this plan revealed these promises were simply not true.
“It makes me scared”.
Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner weighed in on passage of the AHCA.
Governor Bruce Rauner, however, says the bill continues to be a deep concern to his administration.
