US Officials Invoke Threat to Dollar in Pitching Iran Deal
Republican U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy said President Barack Obama’s nuclear agreement with Iran would enable Iran to secure long-range missiles that could one day reach the United States. What is remarkable about the Iran deal controversy, however, is that Jews are more united – in opposition – than on most other issues.
But it is a strong one. “I am greatly concerned that the agreement lacks a crystal clear statement that the global community reserves the right to take all military, economic, and diplomatic measures necessary during the course of the deal and beyond to deter Iran from ever developing a nuclear weapon”. It may acquire ICBM’s in eight years and will eventually be free to enrich without limitation, enabling it to become a nuclear weapons threshold state and reducing the “breakout time” between enrichment and nuclear weapons to zero.
A liberal, Jewish-born lawmaker from Hawaii, Schatz had been anticipated to return down in favor of the deal. “But having the nuclear material to build a bomb isn’t the same as being able to deliver it”. The countries whose cooperation we need – including those in the European Union, China, Japan, India and South Korea, as well as the companies and banks that handle their oil purchases and hold foreign reserves – are among the largest economies in the world.
It will also impose provisions for inspections of Iranian facilities, including military sites. “And it’s needless to say that before arriving to a conclusion I will be speaking to the senior senator, because his opinion is something that I value greatly”. These young Iranians are increasingly well-educated and pro-American.
Albright also emphasizes that Iran is going to be “taking active countermeasures” to limit inspector access and hide illicit work from the intelligence community.
The American Israel Public Affairs Committee treated administration speakers who addressed about 700 activists who flew in last month to lobby against the deal “with courtesy and respect”, Cohen said.
“I have concluded the risks of not doing the deal greatly outweigh the risks of doing the deal”, Himes said.
Emblematic of all this – and what has prompted me to write – was the treatment of Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., though he was enlisted after the group’s president, Gary Samore, stepped down because he supports the accord.
State Department spokesman Mark Toner said Washington has no intention to follow the example of Switzerland, noting U.S. sanctions remain in place and penalties would still apply to any country or company that violates them.
In a column for The Palm Beach Post, Hastings of Delray Beach, who represents Florida’s 20th district, said he gave the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action to curb Iran’s nuclear program a “careful review”. “At this point, I’m not getting any numbers out but we’re working with all members and the response has been positive”.
“Sen. Coons is paying closer attention to the calls, emails and letters the office is receiving from constituents regarding the Iran deal”, said spokesman Sean Coit.
The Republican-controlled Congress is expected in September to vote against the deal, but is unlikely to have enough support to overturn Obama’s veto.
