US Open Buzz Never Gets Old – Federer
Speaking after his second round win over Benoit Paire, Federer was asked who would win between the Federer of 2018 and Federer of 2008.
Roger Federer won the US Open title five consecutive times, starting in 2004.
During a changeover, Paire took the unconventional way of changing his t-shirt by ripping it apart.
Twenty-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer on Thursday scored a 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 win over Frenchman Benoit Paire to enter the third round of the ongoing US Open at the Arthur Ashe Stadium here.
Federer came out in an all-maroon outfit and smelt blood early on as he broke in the opening game.
Federer, playing in the US Open main draw for the 18th time, is bidding for an eighth men’s final in NY – which would equal the record set by Pete Sampras and Ivan Lendl. But an element of sluggishness then was seen in him as Nishioka, saved a match point at 5-2. I love coming to play here, it’s been so many years now. I think it was not a bad performance by any means by me. But he said that the US Open was a, “bigger priority” this year. No. 30 seed Kyrgios started the year with a second career title on home soil in Brisbane but did not find success again until the grasscourt swing with back-to-back semi-final appearances at the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart and the Fever-Tree Championships at the Queen’s Club. Djokovic, who has won two of his 13 Grand Slam titles in NY, will play Marton Fucsovics in the afternoon, after reigning Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki takes on 2011 U.S. Open champion Sam Stosur.
As for the players who have to cope with the sweltering conditions, it is all part of the brutal test that is the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year.
Federer’s coolness on the court belied another day where players needed cooling towels as much as their rackets. No14 seed Fabio Fognini lost to John Millman, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, who will play Mikhail Kukushkin.
Right to the final game, errors mixed it up with some cracking winners on both sides, as both players serving well below 50 percent.
The WTA has a heat rule allowing women a break between the second and third sets.
Partly cloudy. High of 97 degrees (36 Celsius). Federer has been able to reach the final only once since then when he was defeated by Novak Djokovic in 2015.
Djokovic, seeded sixth, will face American Tennys Sandgren in the next round.
A heat advisory is in effect in NY through late Wednesday, with temperatures in the mid-90s and heat index values in excess of 100 degrees (38 Celsius).
