US PGA Championship: Best loss ever
Day held off a challenge from the American to win the title, carding a record score of 20 under par after 72 holes, the first time a golfer has scored that low in a major championship.
Spieth claims the top spot for the first time in his career, completing his memorable string of 2015 majors with a 17-under finish at Whistling Straits.
Spieth gave it his best shot, but even the Masters and U.S. Open champion could tell what he was up against the way the 27-year-old Australian powered one drive after another and didn’t let anyone closer than the two-shot lead with which he started the final round.
He took charge from the get-go and finished the job in style on Sunday, when he was the best player on the course despite new world No1 Jordan Spieth’s relentless brilliance pushing him all the way. Jordan Spieth also further cemented the well-known fact that he can contend at golf’s biggest stage despite being only 22 years old. “It’s an unbelievable feeling”. I looked at the board and said, “Wow”. He was a force to contend with without a major under his belt and now that he has one, the rest of the players should watch out.
He followed it up with a congratulatory tweet after Day and Spieth finished.
“Right now I’m focused on just getting my game the way I think it has to be to win events like this”.
Spieth’s solo second place meant McIlroy needed a top-six finish to stay number one, and the 26-year-old came up short with a final-round 69 that left him in 17th place on 279 in his defense of the PGA crown he won at Valhalla last year. “And yet Day had played flawless golf until dropping a shot on the 8th and inexplicably chunking an approach shot to the 9th”.
“It was probably the hardest round of golf I have ever had to play”, he said. To be number one in the world as a team is fantastic.
As soon as he rolled his birdie putt to within inches of the 18th hole on Sunday to make absolutely certain of his first major title after numerous near-misses, Day was in tears as the enormity of his achievement hit home.
Jason Day has been a contender in majors for a long time.
“Overall, I’m just pleased with how things went for me”. And Rory McIlroy won his battle with injury to serve notice to the pair of them that he wants both embellishments back. Ten years ago, all but three golfers that ended the year ranked in the top 10 were at least 35 years old.
“I got the update online and it takes a little while to get updated so I was very anxious”, she said, via ABC Brisbane.
