US president-elect criticizes China again
He said: “This is just the Taiwan side engaging in a petty action, and can not change the “one China” structure already formed by the worldwide community”.
Taiwan has been a self-ruled rival of China since 1949, when the Kuomintang (KMT) escaped to Taiwan after losing the Civil War to the Communists, and the call was the first by a United States president-elect or president since President Jimmy Carter adopted the one-China policy in 1979. For the Asian powerhouse, Taiwan remains as part of China.
There have been conflicting reports about the call.
“He avails himself of any number of different information sources, including those that come from the State Department and including those that come from intelligence briefings”.
Over the weekend, Secretary of State John Kerry said it would be “valuable” if President-elect Trump informed current officials that any such calls with foreign leaders beforehand. He shrugged off the attention to the incident as media hype. Pence clarified that the call does not reflect a shift in USA policy.

China lodged a diplomatic protest with the us over the call.
Its decision to speak up about the phone conversation revealed a serious divide between Trump and the Obama administration over how to handle one of the nation’s top geopolitical rivals. The president-elect’s perspective is he accepted a congratulatory call.

China had “no comment” on the tweets’ motivation, foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang told reporters today. “The Chinese side in Beijing and Washington lodged solemn representations with the relevant side in the US The world is very clear on China’s solemn position”.
With China holding about a trillion dollars in USA government debt, Washington would have little leverage in such talks, but the declaration would harm ties and boost the prospect of a trade war.
His tweets are likely to add to the US-China ongoing tension.
Trump, meanwhile, insisted in a tweet Friday that the Taiwanese President “CALLED ME” to congratulate him on the winning the presidency.
